When we mentioned that H2H is now offering coaching, we got a variety of replies: some positive, some not, and some that indicated we should clarify what coaching is. I’ve asked John White, H2H board member and coach extraordinaire to give us a hand with this. ~ Paul

Coaching and Mentoring Both of these skills are vitally important in the world of organic church. They are similar in that they both help people and groups grow and mature. But, they are different in the way accomplish that goal.

Tony Stoltzfus in Leadership Coaching (AffLnk) helps us understand the difference between these two words. “A mentor is a more senior individual who imparts what God has given (wisdom, opportunities, and counsel) to a more junior person.” Mentoring is more about pouring into someone. Mentoring involves more telling and teaching. Mentoring is more appropriate for someone who is just starting out in the learning process.

Stoltzfus suggests that a coach, on the other hand, “draws out the abilities God has put in someone”. Coaching is more about asking important questions and listening deeply. Coaching is helping people learn instead of teaching them. Coaching is more appropriate for someone who is farther along in the learning process and is critical for reaching maturity. In mentoring, the person is seen more as a bucket into which wisdom is poured. In coaching, the person is seen more as an acorn full of potential which must be drawn out.

Both mentoring and coaching are necessary. Determining where someone is on the journey will determine which skill is emphasized. Quite often in the past, mentoring alone has been emphasized in the world of traditional church. In the world of organic church, it will be critical that all of us have people in our lives who can both mentor and coach us depending on where we are on the journey.

Here’s a great paragraph on coaching from Tony Stoltzfus in Leadership Coaching. “In our generation, a seismic change is occurring in the way that leaders are trained and developed. The way we lead and the way we learn to lead is already quite different than it was a few decades ago. Top-down systems are giving way to team models that empower many more people to lead, and in a much wider variety of roles. This shift toward teamwork and empowerment puts a premium on having great interpersonal skills. Much more than in the past, ministry leadership means influencing and empowering rather than ordering – working together with others, instead of telling them what to do or simply doing the work yourself. In short, to be an effective leader means being a coach.” p. vii.

Why pay for Coaching? Jesus gives us the principle in Lk. 10:7. “The laborer is worthy of (or deserves) his wages.” Paul gives his commentary on this principle in quite a lot of detail in 1 Cor. 9:4-14. Verse eleven seems particularly important. To paraphrase: “If we have invested spiritually in you, it is appropriate for you to invest materially (or financially) in our ministry.”

Of course, in practice, all of us frequently invest spiritually in one another without any financial consideration. However, at times, the Body may decide that it is of special value to the Kingdom that an individual be financially supported so that they can invest more of their time in a particular ministry. That is exactly what the Board of House2House Ministries has done with Katie Driver. The Board believes that it would be of value for the Kingdom for Katie to be released from earning money through ordinary means and that her “wages” be provided through her coaching ministry.

The Inextinguishable Blaze: God’s Call To Holiness, Repentance, Intimacy and Spiritual Awakening
by R Maurice Smith

The Church of the early 21st Century needs something that only God can give. He has done it in the past, and He can do it again. But it will not come by means of any program, activity or act of self-effort. It is a sovereign act of God in response to and in fulfillment of the heart-cry found In Isaiah 64:1, “Oh, that Thou wouldst rend the heavens and come down”. The Church of our generation desperately needs a divine visitation, a burning coal fresh from God’s altar that turns smart Christians into flaming radicals – carriers of that “inextinguishable blaze” which, throughout the history of the Church, has set the world on fire for Christ. In this book, organic church advocate and revival historian Maurice Smith argues that God is preparing His Church for a season of spiritual awakening by calling out “Children of the Burning Heart” who will seek Him in genuine holiness and fear, personal repentance and renewed intimacy with Him. Are you one of them? This book is your call to become a carrier of “The Inextinguishable Blaze”.

No Longer Church As Usual

by Tim Kurtz

No Longer Church As Usual breaks down the historical first century church model of gathering and fellowship and makes it plain. For those who truly want God’s best, after reading this book you will see how far away the Church as a whole- has drifted from God’s best.

While others just write about Simple/House Church and theorize new concepts on how Simple Churches should gather, Tim Kurtz, author of No Longer Church As Usual, is living Simple/House Church daily.

Tim Kurtz brings a unique perspective to Simple/House Church. It is a perspective that not only needs to be read but heard, in order to bring truth to a 2010, Barna Group study stating that, “blacks make up three-tenths (30%) of its house church attenders.” I’m just saying…

This book is a clear and compelling confirmation to me that the 21st century church model is a train wreck. But wait!
We can recover what we once enjoyed.

In the early centuries Christianity was an explosive, viral movement that spread by word of mouth. Persecution could not stop it. In fact, it often helped to spread it.

But today, the gospel is no longer spreading like wildfire throughout the Western world. Slowly, Christianity has morphed into something much different…a stable institutionalized religion that no longer grips us with the excitement and spirituality of the early years.

Ross Rohde believes that this excitement and passion can be recaptured. In Viral Jesus he uses examples from the Bible and today to explore how we can return to our roots and once again enjoy the excitement, simple spirituality, and explosive growth of early Christianity.

I have been to many house church conferences. I have also heard them criticized often. I am not immune to the irony of having a big meeting to discuss a concept that is, by its very nature, the antithesis of big meetings.

I have also heard a lot of praise for house church conferences. One characteristic of house churches is that they are often very hard to find. Some house church members feel alone and isolated. A conference is one of the few places where they can network with like-minded believers.

Last month I attended the first of at least five regional conferences that House2House will produce this year. It was called Momentum West Coast and it took place at Southlands Christian School in Southern California.

I thought this was one of the best conferences I have attended. What made it unique? Well, here’s the recipe: a speaker would present a topic for 20-30 minutes. Then there would be 30 minutes of group discussion time. Repeat. Sprinkle in some nice worship time, relevant videos and testimonies.

The format worked well. However, there were two important elements that made this a truly unforgettable event. First, we had a coach/facilitator around each table who helped to answer questions and encourage discussion. These coaches have committed to stay in contact with the people in their groups for one year.

The second, and to me the most memorable element, was a kind of commissioning service that took place at the end of the event. We asked if anyone felt led to start a new organic church at that time. Eight people came forward to be prayed for and sent out. It was a beautiful moment.

I could talk about the team who put this together, the great line up of speakers who were there including Neil Cole and Ross Rhode, the awesome worship led by Scott Underwood, the hearts of all those who attended and on and on. But none of that would have mattered without God’s presence. There were so many ways that we saw the Holy Spirit’s power before, during, and even after Momentum.

Dates and locations for upcoming conferences are being determined now, with most being set for the Labor Day weekend. It will be interesting to see what happens as we bring this conference to different locations around the U.S. and beyond. May God’s Kingdom increase.

Protestantism carries on with the practice of making the “pastor” the focal point in church. Using 1 Corinthians 12:14, Zens shows the usual way of doing church contradicts Paul’s self-evident remark that “the body indeed is not one part” and then goes on to unfold from that Epistle how the living church functions “with many parts.” Jon dismembers the traditional pastor doctrine from various angles by combining two new essays and a response to Eugene Peterson’s The Pastor: A Memoir, with three past articles and excerpts from his response to Dr. Ben Witherington’s review of Pagan Christianity.

I hope everyone had a great Easter/Resurrection Sunday. He IS risen, today and forever more. Along those lines, if you’ve never seen Neil Cole’s A Cruel And Unusual Punishment, I highly recommend it. It’s not a typical Easter story, but it packs a real punch.

Recently I shared a meal with a gentleman who has been involved with and written about House Church for many years. I asked him what he thought of the changes at House2House, and he said that reading the e-letters had not given him a clear understanding of what was happening. As this fellow is one of the sharper tools in the shed, his “not getting it” tells me that we have failed to express what is happening. I will attempt to rectify that here – shoot me an email if I fail!

House2House was conceived and birthed in the late 90’s, when simple/house/ organic church was unknown to most in North America. We saw our mission as being a sort of “shop window” that would help people see organic church in its various forums, and find what worked for them. To do this, we partnered with and promoted groups such as CMA (Neil Cole), PTM (Frank Viola), The Parousia Network (Maurice Smith), Dawn North America, and others. The goal was not to make people part of H2H, but rather to connect them with the best resources for what God had them doing.

More than a decade later, house church is no longer an unknown, and for the last couple of years the H2H board has been asking ourselves if we have fulfilled our mandate, and should close up shop (as some others have) or if we have only completed the first part and God was ready to show us the next part.

The answer came from looking at the body of Christ differently. Rather than seeing simple church people and traditional church people, we realised that it’s a continuum, from those who are not at all organic, to those who are very organic. There are individuals and groups all along that continuum who are interested in moving toward the more organic end of the spectrum. Some want to move a long way, some only a short way. Some really want to be more organic, while others are simply chasing the next program or tactic for “church growth”. If we see more organic as a good thing, then all of those who wish to move that direction have a goal worth supporting, regardless of why they want to change.

With this in mind, consider the new H2H mission statement: “It is the mission of House2House to serve the Body of Christ by equipping those seeking a simple/more organic form of church.” We are here for anyone, anywhere on the spectrum, interested in moving towards a more organic form of gathering as the church.

One exciting way of doing that is that we have just started to offer coaching. Katie Driver, a board member and long-time organic church person, is our first coach. Katie was already doing this; we’re just helping to connect her with those who may benefit from what she does. If you want to move towards being more organic, but don’t feel sure of how, Katie could be a huge help to you.

We have other ideas and changes in the works; keep an eye on the e-letters for updates. Let us know how we can serve you, and how we can help you serve others.

Have you thought about being a micro donor, but were put off by our use of PayPal? We have a new, clean giving solution from Razoo, a company that only works with non-profits. You can also give by bill-pay, details on the donation page. Please pray about helping us with our goal of 50 new micro-donors and $10,000 in one-time donations. Maybe your house church would join several others that have recently pledged to support H2H monthly?

You may have noticed that House2House has been stepping up the “ask” lately. We have a lot that we want to do this year but it all takes resources. One of the tasks that the H2H team has graciously entrusted to me is to call individuals to appeal for donations.

God is good and he connected me with Gifford Claiborne. Gifford has had years of experience in business, fundraising, coaching and (ironically) house church. He is an elder in a house church network in Southern California.

Gifford told me that his network would have been happy to give to House2House if only they had been asked. He added that house churches are uniquely positioned to support the work of House2House. Here is what he shared with me…

“Most house churches receive offerings so that they can support Missions (helping those who are on the front lines of house church planting) and Benevolence (helping those of their number who are having difficulty making ends meet, or for special needs that arise). House churches can be especially generous in their support of Missions and Benevolence, because they are not funding staff salaries, programs, and building payments or rent. I’d like to encourage ALL house churches to support House2House as they support and encourage our individual house churches.”

I asked Gifford how House2House has specifically been a value to his house church. He told me, “H2H has been a tremendous blessing and help to our three house churches. We’ve received four new families into our fellowship this past year, and it all came by folks accessing the H2H web site and finding a link to our house church web site and then visiting to see what house church is all about. These four families include 19 individuals.”

This is not the first time that I have heard about the value of people accessing our web site and interactive map. This is a great reason to make sure that your house church is on our map and that the information there is accurate and current.

House2House is here for you. We want to be in relationship with you and the key to a good relationship is communication. We want to be able to share our needs with you and listen to your needs as well. I have been told that it helps to share specific needs. So…

Here are four specific projects that we are working on right now:

We are completely remaking our website.

We are updating our interactive church finder map (the database requires a good deal of maintenance).

We are creating an organic church coaching service. (Details very soon!)

We are planning five regional conferences for 2012 (The first one, Momentum West Coast, is happening this month!).

You can help us to achieve all of this by making a monthly donation here. If you would like to receive a short proposal from House2House so that your entire house church can read it and pray about this together, then just email us here. We will be happy to send this out to you.

Thank you again for your prayers and support. We are in this together.

Press on,

Press on,

Hi everyone,

This is an incredible time for the advance of “the Gospel” around the world. Yet somehow following Jesus can seem (dare I say it!) “ordinary” over here in the American culture. We can miss what is happening all around us. Here are some of the remarkable things I have heard in recent days:

Last week around 4000 people, mainly from mega-church backgrounds came together in Austin under the leadership of one of Austin’s largest churches, to learn about missional movements, AKA house church/simple, organic movements. People like Neil Cole, George Patterson, Felicity Dale (no bias from this newsletter writer!!) and Francis Chan were among the speakers. Another 10,000+ were following the Verge Conference online. God is up to something in this Mega-Micro dialog. Are we listening?

I visited Iran Alive Ministry in Dallas (a 24/7 TV broadcast into Iran) and they are seeing enormous numbers of people come to Christ and house church movements spreading across the country. Did you know that at the grassroots level the people of Iran love America? They aren’t our enemies! More people are coming to Jesus in Iran than at any time in the previous 1500 hundred years. What an opportunity! Are we listening?

Some friends of mine are working on bringing together those involved in simple church movements from across Africa. They believe that this is a wonderful opportunity to help the emerging church planting movements to understand discipleship and not just conversion. They want to learn “best practices” together. How challenging that they have a vision for a continent when often we struggle to have vision for our place of work or our street! What can we learn from them? Are we listening?

Recently the Lord has been saying a lot to me out of the book of Zechariah. Just this weekend, while meditating on Chapter 4 (yes, I was still in bed and half asleep), the Lord spoke to me from 4:1 where it says, “Then the angle who had been talking with me returned and woke me, as though I had been asleep.” Well, was Zechariah awake or asleep. I’m not sure. But the Lord wanted to get his attention. Are we listening?

Most of you reading this newsletter know that the House2House board gets together once a year for a three day retreat to listen, just listen to God. Earlier this year when we did this the Lord was saying plenty to us. And it has been incredible how this has been confirmed by finding so many others since then to whom the Lord seems to be saying the same things. This is why we have begun to reach out to all of you who are a part of House2House and/or SimpleChurch.com and ask for your help in going for all that the Lord is giving us. What we are learning in simple church movements is having an impact right across the body of Christ. The Lord is giving us incredible opportunities to impact the legacy churches all around us, if we will have the humility to genuinely want to bless them. His word tells us, “Bless and curse not.” Are we listening?

Join the Cause isn’t just a donation button on the House2House homepage. It is our way of letting everyone know that opportunity is knocking. But are we listening? We (the H2H Board) can’t begin to fulfill the incredible opportunities that the Lord is sending the way of all simple church movements. This is a team effort, an opportunity to the whole body. We would love your help in any and every way that the Lord puts this on your heart.

And speaking of listening, we Christians, of all people, need to be concerned about Justice. But how can we involve when there is so much injustice. I am proud of my son, Jon, and his involvement in The Story Company. Watch a short video, and then sign up and pass on the word.

by Ross Rhode

By returning to what we once had…

The Pastor Has No Clothes!
by Jon Zens

Protestantism carries on with the practice of making the “pastor” the focal point in church. In The Pastor Has No Clothes, Jon Zens demonstrates that putting all the ecclesiastical eggs in the pastor’s basket has no precedent in the New Testament.
